author visit

The basic idea of the One School One Book program is that every classroom/student/staff will read the same book at the same time.  According to the developers of this program, Read to Them, “the benefits of reading aloud are remarkable—studies have shown that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, build bigger vocabularies, understand concepts better, feel positive about books, learning and more!  When an entire school reads the same book, the buzz and excitement around the book being read increases these benefits and there is the added joy of building community in the school family.” Share your excitement about the books and give students time to share their reading connections and experiences as well.

Everybody READS

3-2-2021 All students at AC Houghton Elementary received a new book, Shelby's Story, A Dog's Way Home Tale by W. Bruce Cameron.

12-16-2020 Our Virtual Author Visit was so much fun! Claire Freedman joined us all the way from the United Kingdom. She told our students that we were the first group she had met with in the United States!

One of our 2nd grade students in Mrs. Bork's class asked the author, "do you work for the Queen?" Claire laughed and told us she did not work for the Queen of England. However, Claire did write a picture book about a queen so she sent a copy to the Palace. AND the Queen wrote her a thank you letter back! We told Claire how much we liked her accent and she told us that she liked our accent!

12-15-2020 AC Houghton students and staff want to welcome Claire Freedman, author of Little Bear's Special Friend. Claire will be virtually visiting ACH today. We are having so much fun reading Little Bear's Special Friend together. We have been thinking about questions to ask the author today.

  • How do you come up with so many ideas to write about?

  • Is writing a picture book hard?

  • Do you draw the pictures in the books?

  • Can we become authors too?

12-15-2020 Thank you for following along as AC Houghton Elementary School read Little Bear's Special Friend. As we enter the holiday season, we wish you time to spend together with your friends and families!

Tomorrow, students and staff will be spending time listening to the author of Little Bear's Special Friend read and answer questions. Claire Freedman will be hosting a virtual author visit all the way from the United Kingdom (almost 5,000 miles away). It will be 5:00pm her time and 9:00am our time when we visit. We are so excited for this opportunity!

12-10-2020 The author of Little Bear's Special Friend is going to visit us!!! Claire Freedman will be Zooming into classrooms at ACH on Wednesday, December 16th. Students are thinking up questions that they would like to ask Claire about writing and the many books she has written. Students are also learning more about brown bears.

12-4-2020 A.C. Houghton students are reading Little Bear's Special Friend about a brown bear that wakes up from his winter nap early. This live polar bear zoo camera is super fun to watch to learn more about bears. Can you guess why I didn't share a grizzly bear zoo camera?

Polar bears are big fans of the snow bath. When a polar bear’s coat gets dirty––for example after a meal––they rub and roll their body across the snow to clean their fur. Polar bears like to be clean and dry because matted, dirty, and wet fur is a poor insulator. And in Arctic extremes, insulation is key! You can find out more at Polar Bears International.

12-2-2020 "One morning Little Bear woke from his deep, winter-long sleep." Ask your student, "what is another word for a bear's deep, winter-long sleep?" Growing a child's vocabulary is a great way to boost confidence!

Pop Quiz: How many pounds of food can a bear eat EACH DAY in preparation to hibernate?

  • A. 25 pounds

  • B. 50 pounds

  • C. 80 pounds

  • D. up to 90 pounds

Answer: D. Can you believe a bear can eat up to 90 pounds a DAY?!?! I guess you really need to fuel up to sleep for 5 months! Another fun fact, mama bears give birth while asleep.

12-2-2020 ACH students and staff are in a big book club together! Our 1st book we are reading as a part of our One School, One Book program is Little Bear's Special Friend. We have purchased a book for every student and we are going to read this book by Claire Freedman!  Follow along with your child as we read together in December.

If you would like to support this initiative, contact the school! We greatly appreciate donations to help buy books for kids.

"Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, a duty. It should be offered as a gift."
